Remove or Update Old Programs
Over time you will probably find that some of your software seems a little out of date. Just because you want to get rid of old programs, however, doesn’t mean that you want to pitch your computer in the trash (or take it to a recycling center if you’re environmentally responsible). If you are wondering what to do with old programs, then you can choose the following option that suits your needs best.
Don’t Just Drag the Program to the Recycling Bin
First, it is prudent to cover ways that you should not try to get rid of your old programs. Many computer users think that they can just drag their old program’s icon into the recycling bin and be done with it. That may seem logical, but, unfortunately, operating systems don’t work that way. Dragging your old programs into your computer’s recycling bin will often make the software impossible to use, but it will not completely remove it from your hard drive.
Add or Remove Programs
If you are a Windows users, then you can eliminate most old software from your computer by using the “add or remove programs” function. To use this option, go to your Start menu and open the control panel. You will find “add or remove programs” listed in this folder. Now you just select the old programs that you want to eliminate and follow the on-screen instructions. The instructions can vary depending on the nature of the old programs, so pay attention to what they say, even if you have removed plenty of software from your hard drive before. Using this function will track down all of the files that are associated with old programs, which will provide a full, instead of partial, removal.
Update Old Programs
Some of the old programs that you have on your computer might not provide the best options anymore simply because they are out of date. If an updated version exists, then you might be able to get rid of the old copy just by downloaded the latest one. If there is no chance that you will ever want to use the old programs again, though, then you should just delete them.
Why You Should Get Rid of Old Programs
Old programs can sit on your computer for years without causing any harm, so why even both getting rid of them? Your old programs might not directly cause you problems, but chances are that they have an impact on your daily life, especially if you use your computer a lot for work or entertainment.
Your computer has limited disk space. Even if your computer still has space available, deleting old programs could improve performance. The more free space your computer has, the faster it can perform its operations. Those old programs might not seem like a big deal to you, but your computer might feel differently. If it was self-aware, it might complain about old programs the same way that you would complain about unused equipment during a long hike. If it’s not useful, then it’s just slowing you down.
