Why You Should Remove that Old Software

It is important for your computer to function optimally. In this regard, speed and efficiency are key. In fact, it is very likely that you purchased your computer at least in part because of the speed of its operating system. However, after you’ve owned a computer for a while, it’s not unusual for it to slow down. Common symptoms of a computer that is running at less than optimal speed are a slow start-up time, an increase in the amount of time required to load programs, and a longer load time when you’re accessing pages on the web.

There are many factors that can cause one’s computer to slow down. Upgrades and installations performed over time, spyware, and data overload are just a few. Running anti-virus and anti-spyware programs is a good first step in returning your PC to its optimal level of functionality. However, if you have already done this, and your computer is still running at less-than-optimal speeds, you may have problems other than spyware.

Don’t Let Old Software Slow You Down

Old software on your hard drive that you no longer use can be a big hindrance to your computer running at optimal speed. Having extraneous programs on your computer can overburden your hard drive, slow down your data processors, and ultimately end up costing you time and money.

In order for us to work as efficiently as possible we need our computers to do the same. A slow, cumbersome, ungainly PC can hamper our productivity. Old software programs that are lying around doing nothing but taking up memory can be a major contributor to this cyber-malaise on the part of our computers.

To Update or Remove Old Software?

So what’s the solution for getting rid of old software? The first step is to find your computer’s uninstalling function. Most operating systems have a tool especially designed to add or remove programs on the system. Once you have found that tool, it’s time to make a real assessment of the software on your hard drive.

In some ways, cleaning up your hard drive is very similar to cleaning out your closet; If you haven’t used something for a year or two, it’s likely time to get rid of it. If you have old software that you never use any more, uninstalling it can go a long way to restoring your computer’s optimal performance.

It’s also possible that running an older version of a program may be causing your system to lag. Software updating can at times be helpful in this regard. However software updating is a double-edged sword. System updates sometimes leave us with programs we just don’t need on our hard drives. Or worse, programs and drivers that are being beta-tested wind up causing our systems to crash or drag.

When it comes to system upgrades, the golden rule is: if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. By keeping your computer free of spyware and viruses you can keep your system operating healthily. By keeping the amount of software you have on your drive as lean as possible you can further optimize your PC’s performance. This means keeping the amount of old software taking up space on your hard drive to a minimum.

However, just as in cleaning out your closet, sometimes you may wind up regretting it after you remove a program. Not to worry. Unlike the clothes you’ve given away to Goodwill or sold at a garage sale, old software that you’ve uninstalled can almost always be easily reinstalled if you decide you do need it after all.
